When Deidre Senior was appointed deputy principal her role involved taking responsibility for technology. She found programmes tended to be skills-focused and outcome-driven. When she asked questions about The New Zealand Curriculum Deidre realised that the teachers didn't really understand it even though they were planning for it.
Deidre decided that she and the team needed help to understand The New Zealand Curriculum and fully implement it in the technology programme.
She was also conscious that during team meetings, each teacher focused on their own subject area. Comments such as, "Well, that doesn't apply to me because I'm in...." were quite common. The challenge wasn't just to learn more about technology but to change the existing mindset to one in which everyone was teaching the technology learning area.
