A year of integrating technology in primary – toys, straws, and birdfeeders

Student's toy plane

This resource describes how a primary teacher integrated the technology learning area throughout a year’s programme.

It provides examples of interesting ways to integrate learning about components in the technology learning area with learning in other areas.

You could explore these examples with your colleagues or on your own to develop ideas for teaching strategies.

Straws

Straws are simple objects that are familiar to children. They provided an engaging and inexpensive context to help students develop understandings around the characteristics of technology component.

Straws come in a wide range of designs for different purposes. Sipahh straws are a recent innovation and contain flavour beads inside the straw and as the milk is sipped it takes on the flavour.

A father of a student in the class had developed the machine that made Sipahh straws. He provided a video clip showing the machine that adds the flavour to the straws. The teacher used the video clip in developing understandings of the technological systems component.
