Strategy 1

Inside Story: Social and Ethical Issues in IT (Video VEA)
You can use this video, aimed at a classroom audience, to promote student teachers' awareness of social and ethical issues related to the development of digital technologies. Through viewing, students should also recognise the potential of this resource to support discussion and the benefit of a DVD to enhance learning related to the component "Characteristics of technology".

Inside Story's news desk leads viewers into a world where information technology meets everyday life. In six self-contained stories, the program organises this vast topic into three specific areas:

  • power and privacy
  • control and security
  • trust and accuracy.

From international stories of potential Big-Brother systems, to local interviews with musicians distributing their music online, this is a program sure to generate discussion. In addition, a "forecast" at the end predicts a number of issues looming on the horizon.

Key terms such as data mining, freedom of information, watermarking and safety-critical software are introduced throughout, and the program concludes with a comprehensive six-point guide to ethical decision-making. A must for IT developers of the future!'

Note: VEA the company that produces educational video's in Australia provides a large range of DVDs related to Technology education. The site is useful to visit.
